CALCIFIC TENDONITIS / SHOULDER CALCIFICATIONS

Description
Calcific Tendonitis, or Shoulder Calcifications, refers to inflammation and the build up of calcium in the rotator cuff (the rotator cuff is a cohesion of four muscles and their respective tendons at the top of the upper-arm bone, or humerus). Calcification in this joint restricts normal movement leading to pain and inflammation. Common symptoms include pain in the shoulder and down the side of the arm, pain when lifting the arm overhead, pain when sleeping on the injured side, restriction of movement, or the onset of pain that is unrelated to shoulder position or activity.

Conservative Treatment
Conservative treatment for calcific tendonitis includes rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy to improve shoulder strength and flexibility, and possible use of steroid injections.

Treatment of Shoulder Pain

Conventional Surgery
The conventional surgical approach typically involves making an incision and using arthroscopy to remove the calcific deposit.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Treatment
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT)is a safe and effective, non-invasive (no incisions) alternative that eliminates many of the risks associated with conventional surgery. For Calcific Tendonitis of the shoulder, ESWT delivers high-energy sound waves, or acoustical energy, to the affected area in an attempt to disintegrate and eliminate the calcific deposit. Although used effectively worldwide for many years, the FDA has not yet approved high-energy ESWT for treatment of Calcific Tendonitis of the Shoulder in the United States.

Benefits of ESWT include non-invasive treatment, a high success rate, single treatment protocol, and fast recovery with quick return to work and normal activities. Studies have shown very high success rates in eliminating or significantly reducing pain. Talk to your doctor about your specific medical condition to see if ESWT is right for you.
