TENDONITIS
| Description
Achilles Tendonitis involves the Achilles tendon, which connects
the calf muscle to the heel. Overuse or injury can lead to
thickening, swelling and partial tears in the tendon. This
leads to inflammation and pain. Common symptoms include pain
and irritation at the back of the heel, pain along the tendon
above the heel bone during or after exercise, and tenderness
above the heel upon taking the first steps in the morning.
Conservative Treatment
Conservative treatment for Achilles tendonitis includes
rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as
aspirin or ibuprofen, physical therapy, and immobilization.
Steroid injections are not common due to the increased risk
of rupture of the tendon.
Conventional Surgery
Surgery is the last resort for Achilles Tendonitis that does
not respond to conservative treatment. The conventional surgical
approach involves making an incision on the back of the ankle
and removing portions of the inflamed or degenerative tendon.
Recovery is slow, may require a temporary cast, and often
includes physical therapy.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Treatment
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT)is
a safe and effective, non-invasive (no incisions) alternative that
eliminates many of the risks associated with conventional surgery.
ESWT is indicated for patients who have experienced chronic pain
for an extended period of time and have not responded to conservative
treatment. ESWT delivers high-energy sound waves, or acoustical
energy, to the affected area to create a micro trauma that promotes
revascularization and triggers the body’s natural repair mechanisms.
Although used effectively worldwide for many years, the FDA has
not yet approved high-energy ESWT for treatment of Achilles Tendonitis
in the United States.
Benefits of ESWT include non-invasive treatment, a high success
rate, single treatment protocol, and fast recovery with quick return
to work and normal activities. Studies have shown very high success
rates in eliminating or significantly reducing pain. Talk to your
doctor about your specific medical condition to see if ESWT is right
for you.
